SARAH BAUM, REBECCA DAVIES, POPPIE JACONELLI

The gallery is a space in which to converse. In this body of work we are exploring the idea of the gallery space as an environment for conversation between the pieces and a platform for enquiry.
By curating the pieces in such a way, we are allowing questions to be asked between the work; individually, in groups and as a whole. Conversations about medium, process and context occur; with themes of femininity and masculinity, security, conservation, intimacy, experience, structure and production.
The links between the pieces are either tenuous and subtle or obvious and blunt, either way a discussion point is created; both representationally and physically.

Opening hours 11am - 6pm daily (except Sundays 12pm - 6pm)

Obscuration

Caroline Abbott, Amanda Lock and Heather Rudd bring us notions of the concealed, the overlooked and uncertainty…

The collaborative installation combines and overlaps our practices, acting as a space of discovery and escapism as the viewer navigates and interacts throughout the room. We, the artists, encourage and subtly manipulate the viewer’s journey, determined by lighting and pathways, insinuating ‘the labyrinth’. The viewer creates their own personal narrative, suggested by memory and childlike associations, attempting to make sense of the incomprehensible.

Aesthetically, the modest installation is alluring, deceptive, yet questioning. Themes of the unnoticed are addressed; some parts may remain hidden, depending on the curiosity of the viewer. Will the viewer look below the surface? Iconoclastic figures reveal their status and importance, implied by the positioning within the room, dictated by an unseen presence.

The sculptural plinths architecturally adapt to the space, forming the apparent pathways for the viewer to explore. The sensual, enticing fabric draped across the plinths acts as a tool for concealment. The lighting draws attention to focal points and guides the viewer on a journey. It is also a device to disguise the figures.

The exhibition will be in a continual state of flux; throughout the duration, the disturbing, yet charismatic figures will gradually change position. The space will be transformed to become an “experience”. The subdued lighting alters our spatial awareness and heightens our senses.

The work simulates a set, alluding to a spiritual place of worship or the indication of a “den”.

“I work with long, destructive processes; extensively sanding, dishevelling or hammering materials until their identity is removed and they resemble something else. I’m interested in how I can explore methods of production – is an object the sum total of it’s parts? In this sense I work retrospectively, exploiting the characteristics of materials to expose their raw form and collapsing an audience’s understanding of an object.”

It’s been a quiet month but don’t worry, we are back, with exhibitions lined up that will make you want to leave the comfort of your sofa and pull your nose from your book to venture out and see some fantastic art!

First up is Lauren Halford. 25th Feb - 3rd March

Halford’s work skips between medias. She creates diverse, multi-sensory projects; spanning installation, photography, sculpture and moving image. With an interest in lost memory and identity, her processes are cathartic; emulating a current or ongoing dialogue between the materials and the operation, in an attempt to resolve or understand.

Keep your eyes peeled for more info about our next and future shows coming soon!

::I'm Sorry::

The Malt Cross Gallery brings you a one off performance from artist Chris O’Day.
prac·tice

noun

1 the actual application or use of an idea, belief, or method as opposed to theories about such application or use.

prac·tice is an exhibition that brings together and celebrates the creative practices of six teachers/support members of staff at Bilborough College, Nottingham. Essentially theme-less, this show highlights and showcases the varied specialist creative knowledge that these members of staff impart to students on a daily basis.

His works do of course extend beyond these delicate almost temporal pieces, that appear to have an air of the whimsical and a disregard for material value. However humorous they are, Auad seems acutely aware of the darker side of life. An awareness of death resonates within much of his work as does his nod at the acknowledgement of the temporary nature of our existence.

Never having fully explored his other works, I’m enjoying seeing his other creations. Certainly a master of his materials, I appreciate the relatively low fi, crafty element to some of his pieces.

We have a great exhibition on from Max Limbu and other artists from Nottigham Trent University.

These students pay homage to Language and Art - a pairing which has often been overlooked and under appreciated within the art world.

Gallery opening hours - 11am - 6pm daily.

WEYA2012! What's going on you say?

Just a reminder to make you sure check out what’s happening this week as part of WEYA2012! With 700 artists from all over the world descended upon Nottingham and over 30 different venues involved around the city, there’s lots to see and do - Visual Art, Applied Art, Performance, Literature, Film, Dance and Music. You can pick up a programme at any one of the venues in and around the city, or log onto the weya website - www.worldeventyoungartists.com

Here’s a brief run down of what we have at the Malt Cross Gallery…

RYAN DUNN - UK artist

Through his practice Dunn seeks to raise questions about the nature of material culture, specifically what it means to be modern in a post-industrial society. The aesthetic style of Dunn’s work often draws inspiration from his Industrial Design academic background at Central Saint Martins College by appropriating and subverting elements from the visual language of contemporary modernist design. In both his academic design research and post graduation artistic practice Dunn strives to work across art and design disciplines and not restrict himself to a narrow pre-determined set of media or processes.

We also have the pleasure of hosting 3 Chinese artists -

Tian Xiaolei

Jingbo Zhang

Jinhua Zhou

With 5 days left of this incredible festival, if you’ve not had the chance to explore what’s on offer, there’s still plenty of time left!
